Orquesta de Baja California (OBC) is the most prestigious and solid artistic institution in Northwestern Mexico. Housed at the Tijuana Cultural Center, OBC was founded in 1990 by Maestros Juan Echeverría and Eduardo García Barrios. Emotions, education, recreation, links, and reflection to enrich the quality of life of the inhabitants of Baja California.
OBC is an autonomous institution of musical excellence that tours internationally. On a national level, the orchestra proudly serves the US/Mexico border area by presenting concerts by its symphonic and chamber orchestra groups, featuring the conservatory’s world class professional musicians.
In 2001, OBC was nominated for Best Classical Album category at the Latin Grammy Awards for the release: Tango Mata Danzón Mata Tango. In October 2003, the orchestra accompanied Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti at an internationally broadcast concert in Laguna Salada, Mexicali.
OBC celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2005. To commemorate this milestone, the orchestra performed to great success at the prestigious Lincoln Center in New York City. The renowned Maestro Iván del Prado became the orchestra’s Musical Director in 2007. Maestro Iván del Prado is Music Director and Chief Conductor of Baja California Orchestra in Mexico and La Habana Chamber Orchestra in Cuba.
From 1994 until February 2003 he acted as Associate Director for Cuba's National Symphonic Orchestra, period in which he conducted more than 200 concerts — including international repertoires and Cuban compositions, symphonic recordings and film scores.
Maestro Del Prado has conducted first auditions of important works both Cuban compositions and international pieces. Among these we can highlight the first ever played in Cuba Nine Symphonies of Ludwig Van Beethoven, "History of the Soldier" by Igor Stravinsky and Julián Orbón´s "Three Symphonic Versions".
Ballet has taken him to be director of such important companies as the National Cuban Ballet and Berlin's State Opera Ballet. In this field he has been recognized by his work among figures like Alicia Alonso and Daniel Barenboim.
Del Prado has conducted major orchestras in Europe, Asia and America such as Berlin's Staatskapelle, Kennedy Center's Symphony Orchestra in the United States, Shanghai's Radio and Television Symphonic Orchestra, Mexico City's Philharmonic Orchestra and Community of Madrid's Symphonic Orchestra in Spain.
Maestro Iván del Prado has been awarded by the "National Culture Distinction" in Cuba and is one of the most renowned figures of orchestral conduction in Latin America.
